Pairing Woodinville Wine with Tacos on Taco Tuesday and Cinco de Mayo!

Happy Cinco de Mayo, and happy Taco Tuesday! I’m looking forward to enjoying our lunch and dinner today outside in our sunny backyard. I’m making enchiladas for lunch and tacos for dinner. Let’s check out some wine and taco food pairing options, using Woodinville wine – support local and #sipglocal!

The wine and tacos pairing guide from Drizly recommends pairing vegetarian tacos with Gruner Veltliner. We have a really good one in town from Savage Grace Wines. They recommend pairing an Albarino with fish tacos – try the excellent local ones from Michael Florentino Cellars, Alexandria Nicole Cellars and Castillo de Feliciana Winery. Their wine pairing suggestion for Carne Asada beef tacos is Malbec – we have so many amazing ones here in Woodinville. Try the Preposterous Malbec from Sparkman Cellars, the Gamache Vineyard Malbec from Warr-King Wines, and the Malbec from Maryhill Winery.

Decanter.com recommends Riesling for pairing with a wide variety of tacos. We grow so much fantastic Riesling in Washington State. I’d start with Riesling from Milbrandt Vineyards, Trust Cellars or the Dry Riesling from Laterus Winery. The article also mentions pairing light Rosé wines with tacos. I’d suggest the Rosé from Ryan Patrick Wines, the Sangiovese Rosé from Airfield Estates Winery, or one of the Rosé from Patterson Cellars.

Wine Enthusiast has a detailed article on pairing wine and tacos. They also mention Albarino for fish tacos, and suggest Tempranillo for beef tacos. One of my favorite local Tempranillos is from Cascade Cliffs Vineyard, and there’s an excellent one at Pomum Cellars too. I am also a big fan of the Tempranillo at Castillo de Feliciana. You might have a Maryhill Winery Tempranillo in your cellar right now, I’ll bet.

VinePair’s taco and wine pairing guide recommends pairing light-bodied red wines with chicken. Think Gamay (we have one in Woodinville, from Cedergreen Cellars) or Pinot Noir (find some in Woodinville at Lachini Vineyards, Torii Mor and Panther Creek Cellars). VinePair recommends pairing Rosé with veggie tacos, too.

I don’t want to forget to mention that Patterson Cellars recommends pairing their 2016 Syrah with carnitas tacos.

This food and wine pairing article from Wine Folly reminds us that the spicier the Mexican food, the colder and sweeter the wine should be, and that we should pair the color of the meat to the color of the wine.

Enjoy your Cinco de Mayo and Taco Tuesday! Let us know what wine you’re serving with your tacos in the comments section below.
